Miss Philippines Megan Young crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali

Megan Young won ahead of Miss France and Miss Ghana

he 2013 Miss World pageant has been won by Miss Philippines, Megan Young, on the Indonesian island of Bali.
US-born Ms Young, 23, beat 126 other contestants and pledged to be "the best Miss World ever".
The competition was moved to Bali from the capital, Jakarta, because of protests from hardline Muslim groups.
Security for Saturday's event was high in Bali, a resort island with a majority Hindu population, but no further demonstrations were reported.
Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, came second in the contest and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, took third place.
Wearing a glittering gown, Ms Young, who moved to the Philippines at the age of 10, wept as the Miss World sash was put over her shoulder by 2012 winner Miss China.
She told the cheering crowd in Nusa Dua in southern Bali she would "be myself in everything I do, to share what I know and to educate people".

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country and the organisers had originally offered to abandon the contest's bikini round in an attempt to address complaints of pornography and immorality.
Protests were led by the hardline Islamic Defenders' Front (FPI), which had planned to cross to the island from East Java but were prevented when the port was shut late on Friday.
The event, broadcast in 180 countries, was guarded by heavily armed police with water cannon while some 1,000 FPI members held a prayer session at a mosque outside Jakarta.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear hit the AT&T stores on October 4

AT&T has just announced the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phablet and the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will become available for purchase on the AT&T website and throughout the AT&T brick and mortar stores on October 4.
The pre-order campaign for the two devices has been going for a while now, but it concludes today with actual Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear shipments starting tomorrow. It appears that AT&T will need three days to finish handling the pre-orders before it's ready to start selling the Samsung duo.
The Galaxy Note 3 phablet costs $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $35 per month with the AT&T's Next program. The Galaxy Gear is $299.
You can check the dedicated AT&T webpages for Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear.

Facebook editing function raises concern over misuse

A new feature allowing Facebook users to edit their status updates may result in "stitch-ups", an expert has warned.
Facebook
Facebook users are now able to correct spelling and grammatical errors in updates without deleting them
Previously, an update would have to be deleted and reposted with any changes, losing any comments or "likes".
But the new capability, introduced to help users correct spelling and grammatical errors, means posts can be modified, and their content changed.
Facebook users who liked or interacted with the original post are not notified of any changes made.
A spokesman for Facebook explained that the update was intended to help people address typos or auto-correct errors, but wouldn't comment on the potential vulnerabilities.
The capability to edit posts is already available on rival social networks, and Facebook has allowed its users to edit photo updates and their comments on other people's updates for some months.
'Real concerns'
However the lack of notifications means that users who may have liked an innocuous post, such as "I love my cat", could find their name beside a post which says something entirely different, or even offensive.
"The latest update from Facebook to allow editing of posts after they have been published raises some real concerns amongst individuals I know and business clients of mine," Kieran Hannon, director of social media consultancy eSocialMedia, told the BBC.

"A like or a comment made on a previously static piece of content is now open to misinterpretation - a fact that many less informed users are currently unaware of.
"The opportunity to 'stitch up' friends or foes on Facebook has increased dramatically."
Reducing errors
Updates that are modified are marked as edited.
A history of the edits made is available for users to view.
The editing facility comes after Facebook revealed more than half its users accessed the site on mobile phones, which are more prone to typing errors.
"It's unlikely this will have any impact beyond making it easier to correct spelling mistakes," said Matt Owen, of digital business specialists Econsultancy.
"If this update allows people to stay in control of their social profile, ultimately they will be happier with it and use the product more.

"It's a win-win for both Facebook and its users."
Edit function
A new feature allows users to edit a Facebook post after publishing

The new edit feature does not yet apply to company pages.
But Mr Hannon says he will be advising his business clients to be cautious.
"It is a concern that a brand could like or comment on a post that is later updated to something that undermines or potentially damages the company's brand," he said.

Satellite measures Pakistan 'quake island' "Zalzala-Koh"

The "quake island" that rose from the sea off Pakistan this week is pictured clearly in a new satellite image.

The perimeter of the island measures 543.3m

It was acquired by the French Pleiades high-resolution Earth-observing system, and has enabled scientists to map the muddy mound's precise dimensions.
It is almost circular - 175.7m on the long axis and 160.0m on the short axis, giving a total area of 22,726 sq m.
The island, sited near the town of Gwadar, came up after the 7.7-magnitude tremor in the region.
Scientists say the intense shaking likely disturbed previously stable sediments and gas at the sea floor, which then oozed to the surface rather like a mud volcano.
The feature is not expected to persist. The ocean will erode the soft sediments, like it has with similar quake islands in the past.
The Gwadar mound is reported to be the fourth in the region since 1945, and the third during the last 15 years.
Pleiades is primarily a French national space project. It comprises two satellites that can resolve features on the ground as small as 50cm across.
The pair were built by Astrium, Europe's largest space company; the imaging instrument was supplied by Thales Alenia Space (France).
Pleiades has both a civilian and a military role, and a number of European countries (Austria, Belgium, Spain and Sweden) have part-funded the project to get access to the pictures.
In this photo released by the Pakistani Government, Pakistani men walk on an island that appeared two kilometres off the coastline of Gwadar on 25 September, 2013, after an earthquake. The island is a mass of muddy sediments, but solid enough to walk on
